Barber or hairdresser: what each one does

A barber specialises in clipper cutting, fades, beard shaping and razor shaving, while a hairdresser also covers colour, lightening, smoothing and the chemical treatments a classic barbershop does not offer.

The short version

  • A cut in a barbershop costs 14 € to 28 €.
  • Beard shaping runs 10 € to 20 €.
  • A full razor shave takes 25 to 40 minutes.
  • Colour and chemical services belong to the hairdresser.

The difference is not the gender of the customer but the technique. Choosing the right place saves explanations and avoids cuts that come out differently from what was asked for.

What each trade masters

A barbershop works short hair and transitions: clippers with different guards, fades finished with a razor, outline shaping and everything to do with the beard, including the traditional shave with a hot towel. A hairdresser masters scissor cutting in medium and long lengths, and the chemical processes: colour, lightening, toning, smoothing and perms.

Where they overlap

Many salons now offer both and employ specialists in each discipline. What matters is not the sign above the door but who does the work: a clean fade takes daily practice with clippers, and colour takes specific training. Asking who will carry out the service is more useful than reading the name of the establishment.

How often to go back

A cut with a marked fade loses definition within 2 or 3 weeks, because the transition blurs as soon as the hair grows half a centimetre. A longer cut holds 6 to 8 weeks. A shaped beard needs attention every 2 or 3 weeks. That rhythm puts annual barbershop spending, with 15 to 20 visits, at between 300 € and 600 €.

Many shops sell books of 5 or 10 services at 10 to 20 per cent off, which pay for themselves at that frequency.

Asking for the cut

In guard numbers rather than adjectives: a number 1 on the sides and scissors on top says far more than short at the sides. Say where the transition should begin, whether the outline should be sharp or blended, and how much length to lose on top. A photograph helps if the hair type is similar, since the same cut falls differently on straight and curly hair.

Frequently asked

+What is the difference?

A barbershop masters clippers, fades and the beard; a hairdresser scissor cutting and chemical processes.

+Can I have colour done in a barbershop?

Only where a trained colourist works there. Technically the service belongs to the hairdresser.

+How often should I go back?

Every 2 or 3 weeks with a marked fade and every 6 to 8 weeks with a longer cut.

+What does a cut cost?

Sixteen to twenty eight euros in a barbershop, plus 10 € to 20 € if a beard shape is added.

+How do I ask for the cut properly?

By guard number, height of the transition and type of outline, rather than with adjectives.
