A barber specialises in clipper cutting, fades, beard shaping and razor shaving, while a hairdresser also covers colour, lightening, smoothing and the chemical treatments a classic barbershop does not offer.

A barbershop cut costs between fourteen and twenty eight euros and normally includes washing and styling, while beard shaping is billed separately at ten to twenty euros and the combined service carries a discount of three to six euros.

The rules require every instrument that may come into contact with blood to be single use or sterilised between clients, alongside disinfected surfaces, clean linen for each service and a written cleaning protocol on the premises.

The basic routine comes down to three steps: washing with a specific shampoo two or three times a week, applying oil daily to the skin underneath, and brushing with natural bristle, with balm or wax only becoming useful beyond a certain length.

A full razor shave takes twenty five to forty minutes, gets closer than any cartridge razor because the blade cuts the hair level with the skin, and its result holds for one to two days depending on growth rate.

A fade is defined by the height at which the transition begins: low just above the ear, mid at temple height and high near the parietal bone, and it is requested by naming that height together with the starting guard number.
