The short version

  • An individual lesson runs 30 € to 60 € an hour.
  • A junior programme runs 40 € to 90 € a month.
  • An adult beginner plays matches comfortably within 6 to 12 months.
  • Court hire may be included or charged separately.

Tennis has a higher barrier to entry than other racket sports: until the basic strokes work, playing a match is frustrating. That is why the first lessons matter so much.

The formats

An individual lesson allows every movement to be corrected and is the most efficient way to build technique from nothing. A small group of 2 or 3 keeps good attention while sharing the cost. A group of four adds volume of play and real situations. And a junior programme works by level with adapted equipment, using smaller courts and slower balls in the early stages.

The frequency

One lesson a week plus one session of free play produces sustained improvement in adults. Two lessons a week accelerate the early phase, when there is a great deal to establish, but from the third month it is better to replace one with real play, because technique without application does not transfer to a match. For children, two 60 minute sessions a week is the school standard.

How long before you play

An adult starting from zero, with one lesson a week and one session of play, usually sustains rallies of 6 or 8 shots by the third month and plays matches comfortably between 6 and 12 months. The serve takes longest: it is the most complex stroke in the sport and the most resistant, frequently into a second season.

Filming yourself every 2 or 3 months accelerates learning more than any repeated explanation on court.

What to ask when booking

Whether court hire is included or added, which can change the price by 10 € to 18 € a session. How many pupils will actually be in the group, not the maximum. What happens if it rains or you cannot attend, since make up policies vary widely. And whether the lesson book expires, usually after 2 or 3 months, which is worth knowing before paying for ten in advance.
