Tennis club membership: what it covers
Club membership pays for itself from about four or five hours of court time a month, since the monthly subscription usually runs thirty to eighty euros and includes priority booking and reduced or free court rates.

The short version
- Monthly subscription runs 30 € to 80 € per adult.
- Many clubs charge a one off joining fee.
- The break even point sits around 4 or 5 hours of court a month.
- Family memberships noticeably reduce the cost per person.
The arithmetic is simple and almost nobody does it: multiply the hours you play in a month by the non member rate and compare with the subscription.
The components
The joining fee is a one off payment on becoming a member, which in some clubs is retained as a share and in others is not returned. The monthly subscription gives the right to use the facilities and to book in advance. Beyond that sit the extras: coaching, competitions, gym, pool and activities, which may be included or billed separately depending on the club and the membership type.
| Item | Amount | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Joining fee | 100 to 1,500 € | one off |
| Adult monthly subscription | 30 to 80 € | monthly |
| Family membership | 60 to 150 € | monthly |
| Junior membership | 15 to 40 € | monthly |
| Court for a member | 0 to 10 € an hour | per use |
| Floodlighting | 3 to 6 € an hour | per use |
| Junior coaching programme | 40 to 90 € | monthly |
When it pays
With a subscription of 50 € and free member courts against 15 € an hour as a non member, the break even sits at a little over 3 hours a month. Adding floodlighting and the occasional extra, the practical reference is 4 or 5 hours a month. Anyone playing once a week is already above that threshold, and from twice a week the annual difference comfortably exceeds 300 €.
What it gives beyond the price
Access to playing partners of similar standard, which is the real problem for anyone starting. Longer booking windows, decisive for the good summer slots. Internal competitions, which give continuity and motivation. And in clubs with wider facilities, use of the pool, gym or padel courts, which changes the calculation considerably for an active member.
Many clubs allow a trial day or a month without commitment before deciding.
What to ask before joining
Whether the joining fee is recovered on leaving. What minimum term applies, usually 6 or 12 months. How many courts there are per member, which tells you whether you will get a booking in July. What is included and what is billed separately. And whether a reduced off season subscription exists, which suits anyone spending part of the year away from the island.
