Root canal treatment in Spain: cost and sessions

Root canal treatment costs between one hundred and twenty and three hundred and fifty euros depending on the number of canals in the tooth, is usually completed in one or two sessions, and on back teeth requires a crown afterwards to prevent fracture.

The short version

  • An incisor has 1 canal and a molar has 3 or 4.
  • The price ranges from 120 € on an incisor to 350 € on a molar.
  • Long term success exceeds 85 per cent when the tooth is sealed promptly.
  • The crown afterwards adds 400 € to 900 € on a back tooth.

The English phrase suggests something dramatic. What happens is the removal of an inflamed tissue and the sealing of the space it occupied.

What it involves

The pulp, the soft tissue containing the nerves and blood vessels inside the tooth, is removed when it is irreversibly inflamed or infected. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, disinfected and filled with a sealing material. The tooth loses thermal sensitivity but keeps its function in chewing and its attachment in the bone.

One session or two

One in most cases, lasting 45 to 90 minutes depending on the tooth. Two are used where there is active infection with discharge, where the canal anatomy is complex, or where acute pain is better settled before sealing. The second appointment is usually 7 to 15 days later and does not imply a worse outcome.

Why a crown follows

A treated tooth loses internal structure and becomes brittle, particularly molars and premolars, which carry most of the chewing load. Without a crown the risk of vertical fracture rises over the years, and a vertical fracture usually means extraction. The real budget for a molar is therefore not 300 € but 700 € to 1,200 € once the build up and crown are included.

On front teeth with little structure lost, a composite restoration of 90 € to 160 € can be enough.

What to expect afterwards

Discomfort on biting for 2 to 7 days, managed with usual analgesia. Permanent loss of sensitivity to hot and cold. And a favourable prognosis: survival at 8 to 10 years exceeds 85 per cent where the coronal seal is completed promptly. That last condition matters, because a treated tooth left for months under a temporary filling loses a large part of that expectation.

Frequently asked

+What does root canal treatment cost?

From 120 € to 190 € on an incisor to 220 € to 350 € on a molar with three or four canals.

+How many sessions are needed?

One in most cases, and two where there is active infection or complex canal anatomy.

+Does it hurt?

It is carried out under local anaesthetic. Discomfort on biting for 2 to 7 days afterwards is normal.

+Do I need a crown afterwards?

On molars and premolars yes, to prevent vertical fracture. It adds 400 € to 900 €.

+What is the success rate?

Over 85 per cent at 8 to 10 years, provided the definitive seal is completed promptly.
