Crowns and veneers: the difference and the lifespan
A crown covers the entire tooth and is indicated when little sound structure remains, while a veneer covers only the visible surface and is used to correct shape or colour on a tooth that is essentially intact.

The short version
- A ceramic veneer costs 400 € to 800 € per tooth.
- A ceramic crown costs 450 € to 900 € per tooth.
- A veneer requires 0,3 to 0,7 mm of enamel reduction.
- Both typically last 10 to 15 years.
They look the same in a finished smile. The decision between them is made on one criterion: how much sound tooth is left underneath.
What each one is
A veneer is a thin ceramic or composite shell bonded to the outer face of the tooth. It corrects colour, shape, small rotations and gaps. A crown is a cap that envelops the whole tooth and is used when the remaining structure cannot support function: after root canal treatment on a back tooth, after a fracture, or where decay has destroyed several surfaces.
| Criterion | Veneer | Crown |
|---|---|---|
| Surface covered | visible face | whole tooth |
| Tooth reduction | 0,3 to 0,7 mm | 1 to 2 mm |
| Main indication | appearance | structural |
| Price in ceramic | 400 to 800 € | 450 to 900 € |
| Price in composite | 180 to 350 € | not applicable |
| Sessions | 2 to 3 | 2 to 3 |
| Usual lifespan | 10 to 15 years | 10 to 15 years |
| Resistance to edge impact | medium | high |
When there is no choice
After root canal treatment on a molar or premolar the indication is a crown, because the tooth has lost internal structure and a veneer offers no protection against vertical fracture. With extensive decay affecting several surfaces, a veneer is not an option either. And with untreated intense bruxism, a ceramic veneer carries a much higher fracture risk, so the cause should be addressed first.
The reduction is permanent
A veneer requires 0,3 to 0,7 millimetres of enamel to be removed and a crown 1 to 2 millimetres around the whole circumference. That tissue does not grow back: once prepared, the tooth depends on a restoration for life. It is worth exhausting the less invasive options first, such as whitening, orthodontics to correct position, or direct composite build up at 120 € to 300 €, which is reversible.
In cases of shape and colour, a combination of orthodontics and whitening sometimes achieves what was presented as 8 veneers at 600 € each.
Lifespan and maintenance
Both average 10 to 15 years, with cases passing 20 and others failing at 5 through bruxism or poor hygiene. The weak point is the margin between restoration and tooth: if plaque accumulates there, decay develops underneath and the piece must be remade. Daily interdental cleaning, an annual review and a night guard for bruxism are the 3 measures that most extend service life.
Frequently asked
+What is the difference?
A veneer covers only the visible face of the tooth; a crown envelops the whole tooth.
+What do they cost?
Four hundred to eight hundred euros for a ceramic veneer and 450 € to 900 € for a crown, per tooth.
+How much tooth is removed?
0,3 to 0,7 millimetres for a veneer and 1 to 2 millimetres around the tooth for a crown.
+When is a crown compulsory?
After root canal treatment on molars and premolars, and where decay or fracture has destroyed the structure.
+How long do they last?
Ten to fifteen years on average, with bruxism and margin hygiene deciding the outcome.
