Padel tournaments: how the categories work
Tournaments group players into categories by level, usually from first to fifth or on a numeric scale, and by age, with formats combining group stages and a knockout draw depending on the number of pairs entered.

The short version
- Entry per pair runs 20 € to 60 €.
- Federated tournaments require a valid licence.
- A group format guarantees at least 2 or 3 matches per pair.
- The category is set by the higher rated player in the pair.
A first tournament usually disappoints for one specific reason: the pair enters a category above its level and is out in 40 minutes.
How they are organised
By level, with categories running from first, the highest, down to fourth or fifth depending on the event, and in some cases on an equivalent numeric scale. By age, with veteran categories in bands. And by gender, with men's, women's and mixed draws. A pair's category is set by its higher rated player, not by the average of the two.

Groups or straight knockout
A straight knockout draw is quick to organise but eliminates half the field after one match. A group stage guarantees 2 or 3 matches per entry, which is why it has become standard in amateur and social events. For anyone starting out, that format is the one to look for: paying 40 € for 45 minutes of play leaves a poor impression, and paying it for 3 matches does not.
The licence
Federated tournaments require a valid licence, which includes sports accident insurance and typically costs 30 € to 70 € a year depending on the regional federation and the category. Club social tournaments and friendly events do not usually require one, though it is worth checking what accident cover the organiser provides, since an injury on court with no sports insurance is handled through ordinary channels.
The licence is arranged through the club and is normally active within 24 to 72 hours.
Preparing for the first one
Enter a category below rather than above, because winning two matches motivates more than losing one. Play with your regular partner rather than someone new. Take 2 rackets, spare footwear and enough water, since a summer day can mean 3 hours on court in high temperatures. And expect delays: tournament schedules slip by 30 to 90 minutes without difficulty.
