High and low season in Mallorca: what changes

High season runs from June to September with the highest prices and occupancy, while May and October offer favourable weather at noticeably lower rates and low season from November to March has a reduced offer.

The short version

  • July and August carry the highest prices of the year.
  • May and October can cost 30 to 50 per cent less.
  • In low season part of the hotel stock closes.
  • The sea is warmer in September than in June.

The same room can cost three times as much depending on the week. And the expensive week does not always deliver the better experience.

The real calendar

The season starts around April with partial opening, establishes itself in May, peaks between late June and August, holds well through September and fades across October. From November to March much of the accommodation in resort areas closes, while Palma and the inland towns keep operating all year round.

What each period offers.

The sea and the heat

The water warms later than the air: in May the ambient conditions can be superb while the sea is still cool, and in September the reverse holds, with the water at its most pleasant of the year. July and August carry the highest temperatures, and the middle of the day is hard for walking inland or in the sierra, activities that are comfortable in May and October.

What you save

Moving a holiday from August to the second half of September cuts accommodation by 30 to 50 per cent, and car hire by a similar proportion. On a family trip of 7 nights with a car that can mean 600 € to 1,500 € of difference. In exchange some seasonal services begin to close, so it is worth checking the ones that matter before booking.

The best known coves, which fill before 10 in the morning in August, are accessible mid morning in June and September.

What to look for in each season

Beach and atmosphere, June to September. Hiking and cycling, March to May and October to November, when the sierra is walkable without extreme heat. City, food and heritage, all year, with the advantage that in winter Palma can be seen without queues. And for quiet with good weather, the first half of October has the best balance of atmosphere, price and temperature.

The climate follows that calendar. In May and October maximum temperatures sit around 22 to 26 degrees, comfortable for walking; in July and August they frequently pass 32 and the central hours become unusable. The sea moves from about 18 degrees in May to close to 26 in September, and those 8 degrees explain why September beats June for swimming.
