Tolls and fuel in Spain: what a road trip costs

There are no toll motorways in Mallorca, so a road trip on the island costs only fuel, while on the mainland tolls still apply on certain concessions and are charged by distance and vehicle class.

The short version

  • Mallorca has no toll motorways.
  • Fuel for 100 kilometres costs about 7 € to 11 € in an average car.
  • A full circuit of the island is around 260 kilometres.
  • Motorway service station fuel typically costs 8 to 15 per cent more.

Budgeting a driving holiday here is unusually simple, because one of the two usual variables does not exist on the island.

Tolls

The island's motorway network is free to use. On the mainland, a number of concession motorways still charge, with payment by cash, card or electronic tag at the barrier, and rates set by distance and vehicle class. Vans and vehicles with trailers pay a higher class than cars. Where a toll goes unpaid in a hire car, the charge is claimed from the company, which passes it on with its own administration fee of 30 € to 60 €.

Where to refuel

Stations on main roads outside the motorway service areas are consistently cheaper, and the difference of 8 to 15 per cent on a 45 litre fill is 5 € to 10 € each time. Over a fortnight with 3 fills, that is 15 € to 30 € for no inconvenience. Unattended stations are cheaper still and are common on the ring roads around Palma and Inca.

Consumption in the mountains

The Serra roads change the arithmetic. Sustained climbs, constant gear changes and air conditioning at full in July push consumption 20 to 30 per cent above the flat road figure, so a route quoted at 8 € of fuel can cost 11 €. Journey times also stretch: 30 kilometres of mountain road takes about an hour, and planning on a 40 km/h average is realistic.

Descending in a low gear rather than on the brakes matters more for the brakes than for the fuel, and on long descents it is the difference between arriving with brakes that work well and brakes that smell.

Budgeting a week

A typical week based in one place with daily outings covers 350 to 700 kilometres, which is 25 € to 75 € of fuel. Add nothing for tolls. Add parking in Palma at 3 € to 8 € a day at a park and ride site, or 12 € to 20 € a day in an underground car park in the centre. The whole mobility budget for a week therefore sits between 50 € and 150 € on top of the rental itself.
