Running a sailing yacht: the annual spend
A sailing yacht adds the upkeep of its rig to the maintenance any boat needs, with sails lasting eight to twelve seasons, standing rigging replaced every ten to fifteen years and an annual inspection of fittings and running rigging.

The short version
- A set of cruising sails lasts 8 to 12 seasons.
- Standing rigging is replaced every 10 to 15 years by use.
- Ultraviolet radiation is the main cause of sailcloth degradation.
- An annual rig inspection costs 200 € to 600 €.
The rig works all the time, including at the berth. Sun and wind in harbour punish sails and lines as hard as a full season of sailing.
The sails
Their principal enemy is ultraviolet radiation, which degrades fibres and stitching. A well cared for cruising sail lasts 8 to 12 seasons; badly cared for, half that. The mainsail cover and the sacrificial strip on the genoa are not accessories, they are what separates those two figures. Stitching should be checked every season, because a seam caught early costs 60 € and left alone can cost the sail.
| Item | Service life | Replacement cost |
|---|---|---|
| Cruising mainsail | 8 to 12 seasons | 1,500 to 5,000 € |
| Genoa or jib | 8 to 12 seasons | 1,200 to 4,500 € |
| Standing rigging | 10 to 15 years | 3,000 to 12,000 € |
| Halyards and sheets | 5 to 8 years | 300 to 900 € |
| Lazy bag and cover | 6 to 10 years | 600 to 1,800 € |
| Annual rig inspection | annual | 200 to 600 € |
| Stitching repairs | per season | 60 to 250 € |
Standing rigging
The wires holding the mast work in fatigue and degrade without obvious visible warning. The usual reference is replacement every 10 to 15 years by use, or sooner if broken strands, deformed terminals or corrosion at the bottlescrews appear. An annual inspection from deck and a detailed check every few years, going up the mast, is what prevents the failure that ends a season.
Lines and fittings
Halyards are turned end for end at mid life to spread the wear, a trick that noticeably extends their service. Stainless fittings are checked for pitting and cracking in the loaded areas. Cars and blocks are rinsed in fresh water and lubricated with a suitable product. And shackles and clevis pins are checked one by one at the start of each season.
A spares bag with shackles, line, self amalgamating tape and a sail needle and thread solves at sea what would otherwise cost a lost day in harbour.
Winter lay up
Take the sails off the boat, wash them in fresh water, dry them completely and store them flat or folded without hard creases, in a dry ventilated place. Ease the rig tension slightly if the boat is left for a long period. And protect lines and winches. That set of tasks takes a weekend and adds years to the most expensive items on the boat.
Frequently asked
+How long do sails last?
Eight to twelve seasons well protected from the sun, and roughly half that without a cover or sacrificial strip.
+How often is standing rigging replaced?
Every 10 to 15 years by use, or sooner with broken strands, deformed terminals or corrosion.
+What degrades the rig most?
Ultraviolet radiation, which works on the boat even while it sits at the berth.
+What does the annual check cost?
Two hundred to six hundred euros for the rig inspection, plus 60 € to 250 € for stitching repairs.
+What should be done in winter?
Remove and wash the sails, dry them fully, store them in the dry and ease the rig tension slightly.
