Parking in Palma: zones, tariffs and fines

In Palma a blue line means paid parking with a time limit open to any vehicle, a green line reserves spaces for residents at a reduced rate, and exceeding the time paid usually results in a penalty that can be cancelled by paying the excess within the first hour.

The short version

  • An hour in a regulated zone costs 1 € to 1,60 €.
  • The maximum stay is generally limited to 2 hours.
  • A penalty runs 30 € to 90 € if not cancelled in time.
  • Park and ride sites cost 3 € to 8 € for the whole day.

The cost of parking badly in the centre easily exceeds the cost of parking well all day. The difference is knowing what the painted line means.

The colours

A blue line indicates regulated paid parking with a time limit, open to any vehicle. A green line marks spaces with preference for residents of the area, where a visitor pays a higher rate for a shorter time. A yellow line prohibits parking and in many stretches also prohibits stopping. A white line, where it exists, is free parking.

The hours nobody reads

Regulation applies on working days, with a morning band and an afternoon band, and typically ends at midday on Saturday and all day Sunday. Summer months may bring extended hours in areas close to the beach. The sign at each stretch states the exact hours and it is the document that governs, since the meter and the app both charge according to it.

If you get a notice

In regulated parking there is normally an option to cancel the notice by paying the amount corresponding to the excess time at the meter, usually within the first hour of it being issued. That amount is around 4 € to 9 € against a full penalty of 30 € to 90 €. Beyond that window the file proceeds, and in a hire car the company's administration fee of 30 € to 60 € is added.

The full cost of one lapse can therefore reach 150 €, where the underground car park next door would have charged 12 € for the whole day.

The sensible option for a visitor

Leave the car at a park and ride site on the approach to the city and continue by public transport or on foot. It costs 3 € to 8 € a day, has no time limit, and avoids circling an old town of single lane streets. For a visit of 4 or 5 hours to the centre, that decision saves money, time and the risk of a scrape in a narrow street with a 900 € excess.
