Laser hair removal: how many sessions are needed
A full course requires six to ten sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart, because the laser only destroys follicles in the active growth phase and only a proportion of the hair is in that phase at any moment.

The short version
- Spacing runs 4 weeks on the face to 8 or 10 on the legs.
- Only part of the hair is in the active phase at any given time.
- A session on the underarms costs 25 € to 50 €.
- Annual top up sessions are usually needed afterwards.
The answer comes from biology rather than marketing: the number of sessions is set by the hair cycle, not by the machine used.
Why several are needed
The laser acts on melanin in the follicle and only destroys those in the active growth phase, when the hair is still attached to the papilla. At any moment only part of the hair in an area is in that phase, with the rest in transition or resting. Sessions are therefore repeated and spaced to catch the remaining follicles as they enter the active phase.
| Area | Sessions | Price per session |
|---|---|---|
| Upper lip | 6 to 10 | 15 to 30 € |
| Underarms | 6 to 8 | 25 to 50 € |
| Bikini | 6 to 10 | 35 to 70 € |
| Half legs | 6 to 8 | 45 to 90 € |
| Full legs | 6 to 8 | 80 to 160 € |
| Back | 8 to 10 | 70 to 140 € |
| Spacing on the face | 4 to 6 weeks | |
| Spacing on the legs | 8 to 10 weeks |
What affects the result
The contrast between hair colour and skin colour: dark hair on light skin responds best because the melanin in the hair concentrates the energy. Blonde, white or red hair responds poorly or not at all, whatever the equipment. And hormonal conditions can reactivate follicles, so a completed course may still need 1 or 2 top up sessions a year.
Sun is the critical factor here
Tanned skin holds more melanin and absorbs more energy, which raises the risk of burning and of pigment change. Direct sun exposure should therefore be avoided for 2 to 4 weeks before and after each session, with high protection on the treated area. On an island with a beach season from May to October, that makes autumn and winter the natural window for a course.
Starting in October allows 5 or 6 sessions to be completed before the following summer.
Before and after each session
Shave the area 24 hours ahead, and never wax or pluck in the 4 weeks before, because removing the root removes the laser's target. Clean skin with no creams or deodorant on the day. Afterwards, cold locally if there is redness, moisturising, and no sauna, pool or intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
Frequently asked
+How many sessions are needed?
Six to ten depending on the area, spaced 4 to 10 weeks apart, plus annual top ups.
+Why must they be spaced?
Because the laser only destroys follicles in the active growth phase, and not all are in it at once.
+Does it work on light hair?
Poorly or not at all. Blonde, white and red hair holds too little melanin to absorb the energy.
+Can I sunbathe?
Direct exposure should be avoided for 2 to 4 weeks before and after each session.
+Can I wax between sessions?
No. Shaving yes, but removing the root eliminates the laser's target for four weeks.
