Highlights or balayage: what changes
Traditional highlights are applied with foils from the root and lift evenly, while balayage is painted freehand leaving the root darker, which stretches the interval between salon visits from five weeks to as much as five months.

The short version
- A full head of highlights costs 100 € to 180 €.
- Balayage costs 120 € to 220 € per session.
- Highlights are retouched every 6 to 8 weeks, balayage every 3 to 5 months.
- Annual spend on balayage is usually lower despite the higher session price.
The visible difference is at the root. The financial difference is in how many times a year you have to come back.
How each is applied
Highlights are sectioned and wrapped in foil or film, lifting evenly from root to tip. Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the section, with more product through the mid lengths and ends and a softly blended transition that leaves the root in its natural tone. The first gives uniformity, the second a gradient that grows out without a visible line.

Which to choose
Highlights for even coverage, overall lightening, or to disguise grey spread across the whole head, since balayage leaves the root untouched and the grey would still show. Balayage for brightness with discreet regrowth, for anyone who visits the salon rarely, or where the hair is already stressed and repeating a root lift every 2 months would be too much.
The toner nobody budgets for
After any lifting the tone carries warm reflections that a toner neutralises. That step is usually included in the first session, but maintenance between visits falls to the client: a toning shampoo costs 12 € to 25 € and lasts 3 or 4 months. Without it, blonde shifts golden within 4 to 6 weeks and the work looks older than it is.
An in salon toning session between appointments costs 25 € to 50 € and restores the tone in 30 minutes.
What the hair needs afterwards
Sulphate free shampoo, a weekly reconstructive mask and heat protection before a dryer or irons. Through the island's summer, hair sunscreen and a fresh water rinse after swimming, because salt and chlorine degrade the toner pigment and dry out already lifted hair. With that routine the interval between retouches can stretch by 2 or 3 weeks unnoticed.
