Gel manicure: how long it really lasts

A gel manicure stays intact for two to three weeks, and what usually determines the moment to remove it is not wear of the polish but nail growth, which advances about three millimetres a month.

The short version

  • A fingernail grows about 3 millimetres a month.
  • The service costs 25 € to 45 €.
  • Correct removal takes 15 to 25 minutes with acetone and wraps.
  • Peeling the polish off takes layers of the nail plate with it.

The polish rarely fails early. What fails is the removal, and that is where the condition of the nail six months later is decided.

What sets the duration

Nail growth, which on the hand advances about 3 millimetres a month, makes the cuticle line visible from the second week. Preparation affects adhesion: a surface with traces of oil or cuticle holds less well. And later use matters, since cleaning products, prolonged hot water and using nails as tools all lift the edge.

Removal is what matters

The correct procedure files off the top shine layer, applies acetone on cotton and wraps each finger for 10 to 15 minutes, then removes the softened product with a pusher and no force. Peeling the polish off by lifting an edge takes layers of the nail plate with it, and that loss takes 3 to 6 months to recover, which is the time a nail needs to renew itself completely.

When to book removal

As soon as an edge lifts, even if the rest looks perfect. Moisture accumulates under that lifted area and that is where nail plate problems begin. Waiting a further two weeks with a loose edge is what turns a harmless service into a problem that takes months to resolve. If no appointment is available, a careful home removal beats leaving the edge lifted.

A break of one week every 3 or 4 applications allows the plate to be moisturised and its real condition assessed with nothing on it.

Care between services

Cuticle oil daily, which keeps the edge flexible and reduces lifting. Gloves for cleaning with chemical products. And no using nails to open, scrape or lever, which is the leading cause of breakage and premature lifting. With that routine a three week manicure reaches the end of its term intact in most cases.

Frequently asked

+How long does a gel manicure last?

Two to three weeks, until nail growth makes the cuticle line visible.

+Why does it last longer on toes?

Because toenails grow 1 to 1,5 millimetres a month against 3 on the hands.

+Can I peel it off if it lifts?

No. Peeling removes layers of the nail plate, which take 3 to 6 months to recover.

+How is it removed correctly?

By filing the shine, wrapping each finger with acetone for 10 to 15 minutes and lifting without force.

+Should I take breaks?

A week every three or four applications lets the plate be moisturised and assessed.
