Engagement ring budget and sizing

There is no rule about how much to spend: the usual range in Spain runs from nine hundred to two thousand five hundred euros, and the decision that matters is how the budget is divided between cut quality, setting and correct sizing.

The short version

  • The usual spend in Spain runs 900 € to 2,500 €.
  • A bespoke commission needs 3 to 6 weeks.
  • Resizing afterwards costs 30 € to 90 €.
  • Cut quality affects appearance more than carat weight.

The first decision is not which ring but how much. The figure that circulates as a social rule came from a mid twentieth century advertising campaign, not from any tradition.

What people actually spend

The usual band in Spain runs 900 € to 2,500 €, with an upper range of 3,000 € to 6,000 € for rings with a larger centre stone. Setting the budget before looking at pieces is worth doing, because beyond a point each additional 500 € buys progressively less visible difference and the temptation runs the other way in a showroom.

Where to place the money

In cut quality before carat weight. A 0,40 carat diamond with an excellent cut returns more light than a 0,55 carat one cut poorly, and costs less. On colour and clarity, the differences stop being visible to the naked eye beyond a certain point, so dropping one grade there frees 300 € to 700 € for the setting or for a larger stone with no perceptible loss.

Finding the size without asking

Three methods work. Borrow a ring worn on the same finger and measure its internal diameter with a caliper: 16,5 millimetres corresponds to roughly a size 12 in the Spanish scale. Trace the inside outline on paper. Or ask someone she trusts. If it is wrong, most jewellers resize 1 or 2 sizes for 30 € to 90 €, though rings set with stones all the way round cannot be resized.

Fingers change volume through the day by as much as 4 per cent, so any measurement should be taken mid afternoon at a normal temperature.

Timing and paperwork

A piece from the display case leaves the same day. A bespoke commission needs 3 to 6 weeks and longer in high season. At purchase, ask for the stone certificate on anything above 0,30 carats, an invoice describing fineness, weight and characteristics, and the exchange terms in writing: many jewellers accept a return or exchange within 15 to 30 days if the piece is untouched.

By measuring the internal diameter of a ring she wears on the same finger, mid afternoon at normal temperature.

+Can it be resized later?

Usually by 1 or 2 sizes for 30 € to 90 €, though rings set all the way round cannot be.

Three to six weeks, and longer during the high season.
