Hiring an electric car in Mallorca: range and charging

An electric car works well in Mallorca because no usual route exceeds about one hundred kilometres, so a real range of two hundred and fifty kilometres covers almost any day without charging away from the accommodation.

The short version

  • The island measures about 100 kilometres between its furthest points.
  • Rapid public charging costs 0,45 € to 0,70 € per kilowatt hour.
  • A 60 kWh charge costs 27 € to 42 € on rapid charging.
  • Slow charging at the accommodation cuts that cost by more than half.

The usual worry is range. On an island this size the answer is that there is plenty, and what actually shapes the experience is where you plug in overnight.

The real distances

Palma to Alcúdia is about 55 kilometres, to Sóller about 30, to Cala Ratjada about 75 and to Sant Elm about 35. The coastal route through the sierra, the most demanding, adds up to between 80 and 110 kilometres depending on the starting point. A full day of touring rarely passes 150 kilometres, which sits comfortably within any current electric vehicle.

What charging costs

Rapid public charging runs 0,45 € to 0,70 € per kilowatt hour, which puts a 60 kWh charge at 27 € to 42 €. Slow charging at the accommodation, where it is included or billed at a domestic rate, brings the same charge down to 12 € to 20 €. Against a petrol car of average consumption, the saving over 1,000 kilometres is 30 € to 70 € depending on where you charge.

What to ask when booking

Whether the car is supplied fully charged and at what level it must be returned, since the penalty for returning it depleted runs 30 € to 60 € plus the energy. Whether a charging card or application is included, which saves registering with several networks. What cable is supplied, because a type 2 cable is essential for wall boxes at the accommodation. And whether the hotel or villa has a charge point at all.

In high season, public charge points in tourist areas can be occupied by mid afternoon, so charging overnight avoids waits of 40 minutes or more.

When a hybrid suits better

Where the accommodation has no charge point and the nearest is more than 15 kilometres away. Where several consecutive days above 200 kilometres are planned with short stops. And where the main route is the sierra in summer with air conditioning at full and climbs of 800 metres, since consumption there rises 20 to 30 per cent above the homologated figure. In those cases a hybrid delivers most of the saving with none of the planning.
