Berth prices in Mallorca

A berth is priced by multiplying length by beam, so a boat ten metres long and three and a half wide occupies thirty five square metres, and the port's daily or annual tariff is applied to that area.

The short version

  • The tariff is charged by square metre of occupation, not by length alone.
  • In high season a daily transit rate can be triple the winter rate.
  • A transfer of use conveys the berth for the remaining concession term.
  • Dry storage reduces the cost for boats up to 8 or 9 metres.

Two boats of the same length can pay very different rates. The reason is the beam, which is half the formula and the half almost nobody checks.

How it is calculated

Length multiplied by beam gives the occupied area in square metres, and the port's tariff is applied to it, varying by season and by category of facility. A boat of 10 by 3,5 occupies 35 square metres; one of 10 by 4,2 occupies about 42, which is 20 per cent more cost for the same length. That is why catamarans pay considerably more than a monohull of equal length.

Rental, transfer and transit

A rental is an annual or seasonal contract with the port. A transfer of use conveys the right to a berth for the remaining term of the administrative concession, and carries its own purchase price on top of the maintenance charges. And transit is night by night berthing, at much higher rates in summer, intended for passage rather than as a permanent base.

What to check before contracting

Whether the tariff includes water and electricity or they are metered separately. What services are covered: security, dock staff, washrooms, slipway, travel lift. The available depth at the pontoon, critical for a deep keeled yacht. Exposure to the prevailing wind and swell on certain orientations. And renewal terms, because in a busy port a contract not renewed leaves a boat with nowhere to go.

On a transfer it is essential to know the expiry date of the concession: what is bought is a use with a term, not indefinite ownership.

The dry storage alternative

For boats up to 8 or 9 metres, storage ashore with launching by travel lift or crane costs considerably less than a wet berth and eliminates fouling below the waterline, which reduces lift outs and saves 500 € to 1,500 € a year in maintenance. In exchange it requires notice before going out and removes the spontaneity of an unplanned trip.
